Things to do During Chueseok for Foreigners Living in South Korea

Updated: Sep 16

Chuseok, the Korean harvest festival, is a very important holiday in South Korea and is often called Korean Thanksgiving. Since the extended weekend runs from Monday through Wednesday, many foreigners will have some extra time on their hands. Many foreigners might be wondering what they should do during Chuseok. Enjoy Chuseok with these fun suggestions!

Travel

The extended weekend is the perfect opportunity to explore other areas of South Korea. Chinatown in Incheon, a quick flight to Jeju Island, discovering smaller towns such as the picturesque coastal town of Tongyeong, or exploring international destinations like Japan are all possible.

Dance the Night Away

Why not take advantage of a few nights out while you're not rushing to wake up early every morning? You can discover many great clubs in Seoul, Busan, Gwangju, and many more places if you love dancing! If you want a more chill vibe, lounges and bars provide something for everyone to enjoy, including music, delicious food, and great drinks with friends.

Explore Korean History and Art

There are many wonderful museums in South Korea. The War Memorial of Korea has war memorabilia, exhibits, and military equipment. Visiting this museum is a fascinating way to learn about Korea's military history. The National Museum of Korea is the largest and most popular museum in South Korea. In total, there are more than 420,000 objects there! Best of all, all permanent exhibits at the National Museum of Korea are free of charge! Last but not least, I highly recommend the Teddy Bear Museum on Jeju Island! Teddy bears are the focus of the museum and this place has everything you ever wanted to know about them! There are two galleries, a museum gift shop, and a museum cafe!

Take a Korean Cooking Class

Anyone who has been to South Korea for even one day knows that the food is delicious! There are endless possibilities for delicious foods, from Ttekkbokki to Samgyeopsal to Bibimbap. Why not elevate the Korean dining experience by making the food yourself? Korea offers a wide range of cooking classes. This is such a fun way to learn about Korean cuisine and you can take your new knowledge and apply it to make your favorite Korean dish whenever you like.

Temple Stay

Visiting Korean temples during temple stays is a unique way to learn about the life of a Buddhist practitioner. There are several temples you can visit, including Bongsunsa and Geumsunsa. It is possible to choose from different types of temple stays, such as a one-day stay or a longer stay. There's no doubt that it's a unique experience worth trying.

Han River Picnic

Seoul's Han River is one of my favorite spots. The location is extremely scenic and perfect for a fall day or evening picnic. Enjoy stunning views while enjoying delicious food and taking tons of pictures with your friends.

Movie Marathon

If you are staying in for Chuseok, why not plan a movie marathon? Whether you invite friends over or do it alone, you will have a great time! For each day, you can choose a different theme. One day might be a horror movie marathon, and the next a romantic comedy marathon! The possibilities for movie watching are endless. It's the perfect way to unwind and relax.

I hope some of these Chuseok recommendations resonate with foreigners living in South Korea. Chuseok is just around the corner, so what are your plans? Comment below and let me know what you think!
